Just when I was getting the feel of writing posts for my blog, or simply getting the feel of finally having my own blogsite after being left out for years now, my former colleagues are one by one having their own domains. Huhuhu.
My ever supportive blogging mentor and editor, Peachy, just recently bought www.atomicgirl.net and my former supervisor, Bhem, bought www.phoebeonline.com a couple of weeks back. Months ago, our beloved bossing Dex acquired www.psychosanctum.com, while my dear friend and co-worker, Ate Razh, purchased www.raziella.com last January.
Is there anyone else who was not mentioned?
Sigh. I think I need to catch up with them as soon as possible, or by the time I decide to join them, they might already be going somewhere else again. Eheh.
So what are the advantages of having your own domain name, you may ask?
- First and foremost, it gives you a personality or unique identity in the World Wide Web.
- With it, you can easily and conveniently direct your existing followers and potential followers to your virtual real estate, just like a building address where people can visit you anytime. (This is very much advantageous to those who are doing business in the Web as prospective customers will uncomplicatedly find your business niche in the Internet, should you be able to establish a good one.)
- You can advertise your own website instead of someone else's when sending emails as your domain name will appear already in the email address that you are going to use. This is because once you got your own domain name, you will also have your own domain name email address i.e. emailadd@domainname instead of emailadd@yahoo.com or emailadd@gmail.com and others.
- Domain names are easier to remember as compared to free web hosts, and they allow you to change web hosts without losing your web address.
- It further allows you to use custom error pages to prevent people from leaving your site because of broken links and other errors.
HOWEVER, having your own domain name means shelling out some bucks from your pocket. You need to spend for its initial purchase and annual renewal as well as the annual renewal of your web hosting. Although cheap, expenses are still expenses. But if you have a kind friend who's willing to take care of your domain's hosting for free, so much the better. As for me, I don't have money nor that kind of friend, and there's no compelling reason yet to get one so I guess I will just have to settle with Blogger for the meantime. Eheh.
Maktub!

total expenses is relative to the specs and package you will choose. domain names range from 350php up to so much depending if it's an unregistered domain or a regsitered one. for the web hosting, 300php up to 1500php for local hosting, and higher if otherwise. i'm not sure with these information though.
domains are the .com, .net, .tv etc. sites. and yeah, they are quite a must if you are doing a business, much more if it is in the internet. so for us, we'll just get one as soon as the need arises. eheh.
sadly, good luck was not on our side tonight. we lost the game. huhuhu. :(
Yikes. my domain is still idle. :-( what a waste. but i hope to start using it anytime soon. all i need is web hosting. :-s
yeah, your domain is redirected to your wordpress site. but at least you already got one so that's one less step you need to worry about. web hosting cost higher than the domain name so that's quite understandable. but on second thought, you earn so much so you're not really excused. eheh.
hope i can also have my own domain name. thanks dex for dropping by.
I got mine from GoDaddy for only $7.15. I used a "promo code" so I got a discount, supposedly the domain name cost was around $10.99. Too bad I forgot the site where I got that "promo code".
But anyways, if you would really want to have one, you can buy one from Blogger at $10 or at Wordpress at $15. If you get from any of the two, less hassle for you because they will do the set-up/configure part.
well, i guess if you are not putting up a serious online business, a charitable foundation, or planning to make blogging as a career, having your own domain is not practical. it would just be mere VANITY. you can still have good page rank and loyal readership even if you do not purchase your own domain. free sub-domains are still the best for bloggers who simply want to express themselves. it is just like writing a diary. it really does not matter much what type of paper you will be using. what matters is the content.
oh ok. that was quite cheap. hopefully, by the time i decide to get one, promos like the one you got are still good. thanks bhem for the information. you will be one of my mentors when i get to set up my own domain name. eheh.
but good thing, i dont have my domain name yet. since i dont have a serious online business, a charitable foundation, nor am i planning to make blogging as a career, homar might have tagged me to be impractical if ever i got to have one now. eheh. dex, ate razh, bhem and peach, are you putting up any of the abovementioned? hmm, you should! eheh.
homar, thanks for leaving a comment but i beg to disagree. getting your own domain name is not just for the purpose of putting up a serious online business, a charitable foundation, or planning to make blogging as a career. it could also be for anything else as long as you have the means to support it. so if you can afford it, even if you don't engage in any of the abovementioned, nobody can criticize you. it's not about having or not having a domain name but rather, who can afford.Ü
I heard you Sir Jude. Hehe. I guess I'm just lucky that I have some lucky sponsors. But I think I would have a more professional approach in finding clients (or clients looking for services) if I had my own domain. Anyhow, to each his own. :D
Finally transferred my blog to Wordpress and paid hosting --> http://psychosanctum.com/
hehe.
yes, paid hosting!
pa-burger ka naman.
burger. burger. burger.
eheh.
